Mike King is an artist whose practice explores the intersection of graphic communication, historical iconography, and the democratization of the multiple. Currently based in Brooklyn, King utilizes the screenprint as a vehicle for sophisticated social commentary, dissecting and reassembling the visual language of the late 20th century. His work is characterized by a rigorous engagement with seriality, where found imagery and hand-cut typography are layered to create dense, narrative compositions. By leveraging the physical properties of inkβfrom high-gloss overlays to gritty, distressed texturesβKing transcends the traditional boundaries of the graphic arts, positioning his prints as vital artifacts of contemporary cultural critique.
While his career has long been defined by a prolific output and a DIY ethos, Kingβs fine art editions are increasingly recognized for their obsessive attention to process and technical precision. His work often utilizes a philosophy of experimental printmaking where the marriage of high-contrast silhouettes and intricate collage reflects a deep engagement with the history of the printed image. Kingβs work has been the subject of extensive archival study, most notably in the monograph Maximum Plunder, and is celebrated in the fine art sphere for its ability to bridge the gap between popular culture and formal abstraction. Now working from his New York studio, King continues to redefine the screenprint as a primary site for artistic innovation and social reflection.
