Bambo Sibiyaβs practice is a sophisticated convergence of traditional printmaking, acrylic, and charcoal. Born in Springs, South Africa, in 1986, Sibiya utilizes his work to radically reframe preconceived notions of race, social constructs, and cultural identity. His "creative oeuvre" is centered on the development of novel imaginaries of Blacknessβan intersectional topography that functions as a palimpsest where personal and collective histories are inscribed and reinscribed with every gesture.
Sibiya describes his process as a voyage through the labyrinth of his own subjectivity, where cultural and religious references meet a formal inquiry into materiality. His fascination lies in how substances like charcoal and ink metamorphose across diverse contexts, mirroring his own constant state of evolution. Through a tactile engagement with his medium, Sibiya explores the inherent potential for transformation, creating works that bridge the gap between intuitive expression and a rigorous investigation into the profound "Blackness" encapsulated within his materials.
