Art Werger is known as a master of intaglio printmaking, using both etching and mezzotint to evoke cinematic narratives from the perspective of an omniscient narrator. Often assuming an elevated observational angle, the result can be both voyeuristic and deeply intimate. βMy goal is to suggest a story that is not yet finished, inviting the viewer to participate by projecting their own interpretations and memories onto the scene.β Werger prefers to work from black to white, gradually illuminating both the image and the narrative. Within this approach he employs cinematic composition and symbology with the goal of sustaining the viewerβs engagement.

Werger is a professor emeritus from Ohio University. Since his retirement in 2020, he has remained active in his studio, Cascade Press, in Athens, Ohio.
