Mazzucchelli Cardoso presents works by four artists represented by the gallery: biarritzzz, Fran Chang, Luísa Matsushita and Felipe Seixas. Working across different media, the group represents a new generation of artists whose practice is grounded both on material and conceptual concerns. Salvador-based biarritzzz, the youngest in the group, is a multimedia artist interested in investigating postcolonial identities in the digital age. In the series of jackets shown at CONDUCTOR, Blue Dream Trip (2022)—shown at the Städtische Galerie Bremen (Germany)—she weaves together the history of Volkswagen and her own family history to probe the origins of economic migration and labour conditions in the North of Brazil. Chang and Matsushita, meanwhile, are both painters of Asian descent. Chang incorporates silk—a material that is closely tied to her mother’s home country—to create fictional landscapes that are meticulously constructed to evoke subtly changing atmospheres. Her work has a serial quality—like On Kawara or Masahisa Fukase—as records of the artist’s own subjective states. Matsushita is an abstract painter whose fluid, organic compositions are characterised by a very precise study of colour. Sometimes verging on figuration—with hints given by her often playful titles—she challenges the possibilities of abstraction in the present. Seixas works across sculpture and installation with a research based on the material quality of objects and how images are translated from the digital to the physical world. Here he presents a work from his untitled “shelf" series, where he plays with 3D printing using different materials and compositions that resemble contemporary still lifes.
Spearheaded by Kiki Mazzucchelli and Luciana Cardoso, Mazzucchelli Cardoso is a São Paulo based gallery dedicated to multidisciplinary artists whose practices are rooted in experimentation. With a strong commitment to artists’ individual trajectories, the gallery fosters long-term collaborations while providing a platform for critical dialogue and creative development.
