For this inaugural edition of CONDUCTOR at Powerhouse of Arts, REGULARNORMAL is thrilled to present Dominican artists Aria Almanzar and Pedro Troncoso, both of whom live and work in New York. Their works are rich in references to Caribbean customs and culture, personal experiences in the USA and the Dominican Republic, and the definition of identity, inviting viewers on an intentional journey where dynamic hues, mixed materials, and craftsmanship converge. The format is a two-person presentation that avoids the "conventional" notion of a forced dialogue between the artists, allowing for spontaneous connection and symbiosis while avoiding a recurring cliché.
Pedro Troncoso was born in the Dominican Republic and is an artist based in New York whose work investigates colonial erasures of identity, diaspora, and cultural memory. He earned a BFA in Illustration from Parsons School of Design after studying at Altos de Chavón and La Escuela de Diseño (DR), and an MFA in Fine Arts from the New York Academy of Art. His work has been exhibited at the 29th and 31st Dominican Biennials, NADA, Art Central Hong Kong, ComplexCon, and the AXA Art Prize, with additional shows in New York, Los Angeles, Hong Kong, and Beijing. His practice has been featured in Blanc Magazine, Whitewall, Artlyst, and New American Paintings, among others.
Aria Almanzar was born and raised in Santo Domingo, Distrito Nacional, the capital of the Dominican Republic. He currently lives and works in New York City. His practice and current projects are deeply rooted in memory and Dominican traditions. He frequently explores the interplay of native Caribbean culture within patriarchal and matriarchal structures, often linked through the colonial legacy. The portrayal of ordinary objects—such as the common sandals worn by people in Kiskeya—serves not only as a tribute to everyday life but also as a symbol of a rich heritage that, for various reasons, has remained a familiar and persistent sight. Almanzar primarily uses oil as his medium, incorporating carefully crafted sculptural components made from resin, ceramics, and other materials.
