David Krut Projects brings Johannesburg-based artist Mary Sibande, who works figuratively to reckon with generational trauma, reimagine inherited narratives, and claim new possibilities for the women who came before and after them.
Mary Sibande's practice centers on Sophie, her alter ego and a composite figure of the South African domestic worker. Through Sophie, Sibande stages scenes of fantasy, leisure, and ambition — experiences historically denied to women in Sophie's position. By placing her surrogate self in these moments, Sibande disrupts the cycle, refusing the limitations that were never hers to accept in the first place.
"A view through the peephole series" by Mary Sibande
In this series, the viewer, is observing Sophie engaged in leisurely activities, but our gaze is mediated, restricted through a peephole. The peephole becomes a device of control and distance; it limits what we can see while heightening our sense of curiosity and intrusion. It suggests secrecy, surveillance, and a quiet violation of privacy, placing us in an uneasy position between passive observer and active voyeur.
David Krut Projects operates galleries in Johannesburg and New York, dedicated to fostering awareness of contemporary art and supporting artists’ careers through exhibition, publishing, and collaborative printmaking.
In Johannesburg, our exhibition spaces and bookstore are located at 151 Jan Smuts Avenue, Parkwood, with our renowned printmaking workshop, David Krut Workshop (DKW), based at Arts on Main - the city’s premier arts hub adjacent to downtown. DKW produces fine art editions in collaboration with William Kentridge, Diane Victor, Deborah Bell, and numerous other South African and international artists.
David Krut’s journey in the arts began in London in the early 1980s, when he published an edition with British artist Joe Tilson. Since becoming active in South Africa in 1992, he has built a distinguished publishing and printmaking practice, beginning with editions by William Kentridge. In 2002, he established David Krut Print Workshop, a collaborative intaglio and monotype studio in Johannesburg.
David Krut Publishing, established in 1997, has produced major publications including the first comprehensive work on William Kentridge and the groundbreaking TAXI Art Books series - the first monograph series dedicated to contemporary South African artists.
