Light for the Amazon is a non profit organization founded by artist Matteo Callegari in 2020. The organization is dedicated to early education programs centered on ecology, sustainability, and the preservation of the indigenous knowledge of medicinal plants. It operates in Santa María de Ojeal, a village in the Loreto region of Peruvian Amazon.
Light for the Amazon brings together an extraordinary team of educators: artists, biologists, botanists, agroforestry engineers, and indigenous experts to create an environment where ideas on ecology, sustainability and healing are shared and hands-on projects are held. Art is one of the most important tools in connecting students with these concepts.
Light for the Amazon believes that local communities hold the key to the Amazon’s future. By empowering students with knowledge, tools and a deep connection to the environment the organization works to ensure that the youth of today can grow into the Guardians of the Amazon of tomorrow.
