4 day korean wheel throwing masterclass
September 9 – September 12

An Exclusive Masterclass Led by Teacher Kwak Kyung Tae
Join us for an intensive 4-day Korean wheel throwing masterclass with Teacher Kwak. Experience a unique and immersive opportunity to learn traditional techniques in a focused format. With two apprentices assisting, the excellent teacher-to-student ratio allows for personalized 1:1 guidance catering to all skill levels, from beginners to advanced potters.
This masterclass distills the essence of Korean throwing philosophy. Teacher Kwak deconstructs each step into a clear, direct, and repeatable framework. Participants are encouraged to ask questions and may have the opportunity to request specific form demonstrations beyond the core curriculum.
Topics range from foundational techniques to advanced forms and decoration. Explore history and clay preparation, master spiral wedging (Gomak-milgi) and efficient centering, analyze sabal (teabowl) construction, and learn Korean-style trimming. Develop your eye for line and form through demos of cylinders, plates, teapots, large bowls (sabal), jars (hangari), and moon jars (dalhangari), including two-piece joining. Discover Buncheong decorating techniques and discuss developing your own practice.
Masterclass includes:
– High-quality stoneware clay
– A Korean wheel throwing tool set for each student (valued at $50)
– Translation by Teacher Kwak’s apprentice
– Access to basic communal tools
– Coffee and tea available throughout the day
