democracy onscreen: stories of participation

October 22 @ 8:00 pm 10:00 pm

Working together, Bard College’s Hannah Arendt Center for Politics and Humanities, The People’s Creative Institute , and The Civic Engagement Commission, in collaboration with Powerhouse Arts, are excited to present “You Are Democracy: A Series on Collective Power,” a three-part event series focused on democracy beyond elections. This series will include a film screening, model civic assembly, and a celebratory reimagining of a public meeting.

Join us for the first event, “Democracy Onscreen: Stories of Participation,” a screening of the acclaimed documentary Convention Citoyenne – Démocratie en Construction, about the French Climate Assembly convened in 2019 by President Macron. The film follows participants through the assembly process documenting the effects it had on them and on climate policy in France. This screening will bring a global experiment in democracy to NYC audiences followed by a meaningful discussion that connects those international lessons to our local civic landscape. Guests include Forrest Sparks (The Assembly Project), Yazmany Arboleda(The People’s Creative Institute), Anna Marchese (Columbia World Projects), and Benjamin Solotaire (NYC Civic Engagement Commission).

*Please note the film is in French with English subtitles.
