Description
Explore the history and craft of teaware in this focused 8 week course. Students learn to throw off the hump and build skills through key forms leading up to the teapot, including teabowls, gaiwans, cha wans, shiboridashi, bottles, pitchers, lidded jars, and ewers. Teapots will draw inspiration from traditional Gong Fu Cha proportions, with flexibility for those who prefer working at a larger scale. Instruction emphasizes the physics and ergonomics of a well‑functioning teapot- spout orientation, lid fit, handle placement, balance, and glazing. A brief focus on teabowls is also included.Although the teapot is the central focus, the techniques taught strengthen overall throwing skills and deepen understanding of proportion and form- knowledge that supports a more sophisticated approach to both functional and sculptural ceramics. Students who advance quickly may also explore altered‑form techniques such as faceting and texture.This course builds on existing wheel‑throwing experience; throwing, trimming, and glazing experience is required. The techniques are accessible to a range of skill levels.Disclaimer: Registration for this workshop is non-refundable.
