Grace Rosario Perkins, When I See A Mountain I Want 2B A Stone, When I See Her Hand, I Want 2B A Bone, 2025
When I See A Mountain I Want 2B A Stone, When I See Her Hand, I Want 2B A Bone (2025) is the first large-scale sculpture by Grace Rosario Perkins, recently debuted at her solo exhibition Circles, Spokes, Zigzags, Rivers, at the Whitney Museum of American Art. Like her paintings, the sculpture commingles diaristic materials from daily life; in this case ranging from plant medicines to discarded bottles gathered with friends and family on and near her tribal homelands of the Gila River Indian Reservation and the Navajo Nation outside of Gallup, New Mexico. The sculpture is grounded in healing with the land, and is described by Perkins' as an altar and spellmaker holding both grief and joy.
A self-taught painter, Perkins has worked as an arts educator for nearly two decades, including as Associate Professor of Painting and Drawing, Mills College, and visiting lecturer at Yale School of Art, Cooper Union, and Tulane University. Recent residencies and studies include the International Studio and Curatorial Program with the Leon Polk Smith Foundation (2025); an herbal apprenticeship with Karen Rose (2024–25); Lunder Institute Summer Think Tank (2024); Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture (2023); and folk healing studies at Curanderismo Summer Institute, University of New Mexico (2024–25). Support for her work includes the Walker Youngbird Foundation’s Emerging Native Arts Grant (2025).
