project overview

Equal Equal came to Powerhouse Arts (PHA) in 2022 looking for assistance fabricating 100 ceramic light fixtures for a custom architectural project. Powerhouse Arts guided the process using their expertise with the RAM press, which allows for high-volume precision production. The hydraulic press compresses wet clay in a specialized two-part mold using 30 tons of pressure, producing up to 120 pieces of greenware per day.

After the success of the first installation, Equal Equal was able to develop the relationship with Powerhouse Arts into an ongoing production series.

artist biography

Equal Equal is a design studio that makes lighting. Their name draws from the architecture term “EQ” meaning equal, or denoting an equidistant length in a design’s schematic. Created out of the shared curiosity of architects Elliot Meier and Serene Kim, Equal Equal is rooted in the philosophy of aesthetic utility.
