we believe in teaching & learning

Powerhouse Arts is a place where artists can realize projects, find community, and grow opportunities to sustain creative lives. In addition to working with our fabricators, participants can engage with Powerhouse Arts through:
- Art making and skill-building classes
- Participation in online and in-person events and gatherings
- Our work-based learning and arts employment program
classes
Classes at Powerhouse transmit visual art-making skills and techniques to individuals at all stages of their artistic development. Classes range from beginner level to advanced and include one-off workshops and multi-session courses. Our teaching staff are artists who have a passion for sharing their craft with others and who are committed to crafting dynamic learning spaces at Powerhouse.
work-based learning & arts employment

Powerhouse provides paid work-based learning opportunities for New Yorkers. We recognize the vital role of artists and creative manufacturers in NYC’s local economy and seek to become a connector in this field, helping people with and without creative backgrounds to train up and secure meaningful, sustaining arts employment in order to support themselves and their families.
In addition to professional training opportunities, we offer educators and classroom art teachers with professional development opportunities, assisting them in bringing new skills back to their own classrooms and learning communities.
community council

Our Community Council is a group of intergenerational, both emerging and established, who meet to influence decision-making about community programming at Powerhouse Arts. In the summer of 2023, six highly motivated and creative Gowanus community members will be selected to launch our first Community Council and share their voice.
Over the course of A year, Community Council members will receive program support and mentorship from Powerhouse Arts staff, network with arts-industry professionals, provide feedback on educational opportunities, lead quarterly community meetings, and collaboratively develop a proposal for future community programs.
